Iron Man 2

Deployment in Monaco

The Mark V was only displayed to have been deployed once, against Ivan Vanko’s experimental ARC Reactor-powered energy whips. The fight was very short, but Ivan Vanko’s whips managed to show they could be severely damaging to Iron Man’s most basic armor, causing catastrophic damage to several sections, and disabled one if not both repulsors, which Vanko deflected with his whips.

Some of the armor had been destroyed by Ivan’s whips as well, so some of Tony Stark’s racing outfit was showing at the end of the confrontation. Only Tony Stark’s use of martial arts enabled him to get in close and knock Vanko down before removing Vanko’s ARC Reactor, rendering his whips powerless. The suit was later shown to be put up in the Hall of Armor in a pristine condition.

Tony built another Mark V for emergency use and scrapped the one from the fight with Vanko, then with the completion of the Mark VII and its improved deployment system, it was put on display in the Hall of Armors.

Armor Capabilities

Speed

With the Mark XLI’s lightweight structure, its speed has increased greatly compared to other Iron Man armors. Having been built to be more maneuverable and faster in speed, the Mark XLI can easily dodge obstacles or projectiles thrown at it.

Its speed may not match that of the Mark XL’s, but it can swiftly fly around without any difficulty. Because of its light structure, the Mark XLI is the most versatile of Tony’s armors.

Flexibility

The Mark XLI’s structure gives it several unique abilities. For example, The suit has very smooth joints, which makes movement very easy. Aside from this, the armor itself lacks the regular plating on an Iron Man armor, which would increase the weight and bulk of the suit.

Combining all these factors, the Mark XLI is a very flexible armor and movement made by the user would be very swift and easily done. The armor’s flexibility allows it to dodge obstacles easily, as well as projectiles that are thrown at it.

Weapons and Tools

Repulsors: The standard weapons on all Iron Man suits. These repulsors in power rival those of Mark L’s nano repulsor cannons. They feature even faster charging on par to Mark XLV’s repulsors (Instant charge on ground, ultra-high tone, fast charge while in flight or hover) due even better power distribution comparing to older models of the suit. Repulsors can be formed on the back of the suit, offering more offense but draining energy rapidly requiring external sources of power.

Lightning Refocuser: Back formed structure. Which includes energy absorber (including lightning released from Mjolnir and Stormbreaker) and 6 winglet-like structures with repulsor transmitter tips. Designed to safely absorb and redirect huge amounts of energy in form of a high-power repulsor blast.

Unibeam: The unibeam is fired from the center chest RT. Given the energy output of this model, it is most likely the most powerful repulsor tech on the suit. The beam can be shot in either plasma form (like standard repulsors) or in energy form (blue beam). The energy form can be used to power up huge objects and equipment.

Micro-Lasers: Energy based laser system in the backside of the gauntlet. Uses Arc reactor as the power source since Mark VII. Presumably with even greater power output than the system used on Mark L.

Formed Weapons and Tools: The Mark LXXXV can form wide variety of weapons and tools like the Mark L, some of which include a fingertip blowtorch, extra winglet-like repulsors (refocuser Repulsor arrays), an energy refocuser, energy shield, auto-energy blasters and a energy blade.

Shoulder Formed Micro-Missile Launcher: Like the Mark L armor, the Mark LXXXV can form Micro-Missile launchers on its shoulder plates and gauntlets. They feature advanced high-power explosive warheads giving higher effectiveness when comparing to the base nano-tech suit.

Medical Suture Spray: A special spray of unknown composition stored in the gauntlets of the suit, can be used to help seal and heal wounds much faster. Deployed from gauntlet’s fingertips.

Zero Cannons: Liquid nitrogen based cannons on the backside of the gauntlets similar to ones used on Mark L.

Armor Features

Armor

This armor features advanced Nanotechnology which helps in forming new structures and shapes of weapons in the suit. The Armor’s composition consists Gold-Titanium nanoparticles. The entire armor is stored within a new removable Arc Reactor which also serves as a storing unit for the Nanoparticles (mentioned by Stark himself), and can be deployed when needed. Despite the fact that the suit is composed of billions of nano-particles, the suit possesses incredible durability, power and flexibility never seen in any of the other previous Iron Man armors.

Deformable

Mark L can be completely disintegrated and re-shaped whenever the wearer desires thanks to its advanced Nano — technology. Tony usually uses this technology to remove the helmet for comfortable vision. Another example of this is when he was fighting Thanos on Titan, and he regrouped nano — particles from his leg to his arm to form a new hand repulsor.

Single Piece Construction

The Suit features Multi-layer, Single Piece Construction which consists of Neurological layer with Plasma Channels that works as pilot-armor control interface, power the repulsors and can be extended to power external modules, Muscle layer that enhances operators strength, Exo-Structure that safely connects muscle layer to the armor layer (as well as protecting micro-RTs) and the armor layer itself.

Neurological Control Interface

Despite F.R.I.D.A.Y. OS disconnected from the Suit when Tony left the Earth’s stratosphere due to the lack of internet connection, he was able to normally operate the suit’s various functions. The Neurological control interface when formed allows Tony operate the suit and form modules without F.R.I.D.A.Y. assistance.

Armour Capabilities

Super Strength: The armour amplifies the user’s base strength and combat skills to extreme levels. This was demonstrated when Iron Man was fighting Cull Obsidian, as well as during the showdown with Thanos on the planet Titan. The suit proved to be the one of two weapons able to make the Mad Titan bleed.

Durability: The armor is extremely durable, capable of withstanding blasts and extremely powerful strikes, as well as being completely bulletproof. This armor is the most durable armor to date. This was shown when Iron Man withstood the entire energy projection from the Power stone, as well as being hit by a piece of Titan’s moon at high velocity, surviving unscathed and during close combat with Thanos and and Cull Obsidian.

Airtight seal: The suit proved to be able to contain and separate the suit’s inner environment (including the wearer) from the outside environment. This includes underwater and space. The suit is also capable of self-supplying breathable air to the wearer if the outside environment is unable to reliably supply any.

Anti-Phasing Tech: The armor is a completely sealed one piece surface which prevents any sort of exposure of the internal components preventing beings like Ant Man from infiltrating the armor. The nano particles can adjust and vibrate at specific frequencies which prevents beings like Vision, phasing through or into the armor.

Surface reforming/Augmentation: The armor is capable of forming a wide variety of weapons and tools on its surface including arm cannons, extra thrusters, wings, and shields of variable size and form. While in combat the suit can move nano particles to cover other body parts if there isn’t enough to completely cover the operator. Nano Particles after moving from one place to another, can take up any shape of the new area it has been moved to. This was clearly shown when Iron Man moved particles of his leg towards his arm and creating left palm repulsor and shooting a beam out of it.

Hyper-Velocity flight: It is safe to assume that the armor is capable of flight Mach 10 or faster with unibeam-level feet thruster and advanced palm flight stabilizers which makes it the fastest and most stable Iron Man armor to date.

Extreme portability: The suit can manifest itself from the new detachable Arc reactor, which also works as a nano particle container.

External Nanostructure deployment: The suit is capable of shooting some of its armor material to form structures to accomplish a wide variety of tasks. This was shown when Iron Man shot a Nanotech blocker on Thanos’ Infinity gauntlet preventing him from using the Infinity Stones.

Trivia

  • The Number 42, according to ‘The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, is the meaning of life. Not surprisingly, Tony finds his own meaning of life using this suit.
  • Unlike the other Iron Man armors as of Iron Man 3, the Mark XLII does not contain its own Arc Reactor due to its piecemeal design.
  • According to its description in Iron Man 3: The Official Game the suit has a self-repairing function, this may be why Tony is able to use it after crash landing in Tennessee and getting hit by a truck.
  • In the movie Iron Man 3, the Mark XLII was in its prototype phase even though it was able to halt the biggest Extremis attacks as seen in the film.

The Mark XLII was one of the many suits that could be seen in the Iron Man 3 movie theatrical poster, being worn by Tony, along with the Marks XVII, XXIV, XXXIII, XXXIX, and XLI.

  • The Mark XLII is the first armor to feature more Gold plating than red, other than the usual Red and Gold plating style.
  • Despite the powerful characteristics of the armor, the Mark XLII armor in the movie is somewhat weak, this is somewhat seen during the Mark XLII’s performance during the film for it being a prototype.

Armor Features

The armor has a Cloaking System. It also has sonic dampening thrusters equipped on its back.

Donning System

The Mark XV, along with all the other newly built Mark suits, uses a more advanced technology that was based off on the Mark VII’s technology, which is able to wrap itself around Tony’s body, without the aid of robotic arms or any external mechanicals.

It can flexibly open itself to allow Tony to enter into the suit and automatically wrap itself around him, anywhere at anytime, much like the Mark XLII’s technology and the other newly built Mark suits’.

Lightweight

Having been built to be lighter than the usual Iron Man suit, to help enhance its speed, agility, and stealth system’s effects, the suit is still suitable for combat, despite its limited weapons, but is not as combat ready as the usual Iron Man suit. The suit is only suitable for stealth missions and is limited to heavy combat.

Armor Capabilities

Pneumatic Force

The Mark XXIX has the ability to create an immense amount of power using it’s single left-handed Pneumatic Hammer. The hammer can contract and then release a massive blow when used or activated.

Because of the intense power its left Pneumatic Hammer can create and release, the armor can crush hard objects or debris in its path. With this ability, it is suitable for usage in construction areas, but can also prove to be a lethal weapon when used against a foe.

Firepower

The armor is specialized for intensive firefights with the Central Unibeam Projector as the strongest weapon of the suit, it can fire much more Repulsor energy than its predecessors, the suit’s weaponry grants damage much more powerful than usual levels while featuring stronger electromagnetism for Repulsor-based armaments such as Repulsor Shields.

Durability

The Mark XXIX is also designed to withstand higher firepower and damage. It is increased and retrofitted with two extra vibranium platings to hold its RT Chest that support the Enlarged Central Unibeam Projector when it fires. The Mark XXIX is also supported with extra elemental armor plates throughout its body resulting in a bulkier yet tougher suit defense. Durability is also improved with the help of Repulsor Shields , Vibranium and titanium plating. The suit’s footwork and leg supports are fitted with extra plates giving it tactical advantage and strength through flight.

Armor Capabilities

The Mark V is an emergency only suit, and thus is only equipped with the basics of Iron Man’s arsenal, namely hand-mounted repulsors. Apart from its lack of heavy weapons and its light weight, it can still fly. However, it cannot reach high altitudes or speeds, and is limited in the weight it can carry during flight, but the advantage of flight means Tony can escape situations that he would potentially lose in without the flight capabilities.

The Mark V is made out of an unknown metal that is not the gold-titanium alloy of the other Iron Man platforms, and is composed of inter-weaving bands of small plates, instead of interlocking large plates, lowering defenses, but allowing it to be collapsed into a much smaller size, roughly the size of a briefcase, when not in use. Unlike the other Iron Man platforms which are powered by self-contained Arc Reactors inside the chest pieces, the Mark V relies on power from Tony’s own chest unit, thus having a more limited amount of power and straining his chest unit, and keeping anyone else from using the suit.

Essentially, the suit is only meant for usage in a civilian environment when away from the primary Iron Man platforms, and not geared for regular use on the more dangerous missions Iron Man may go on. Against terrorists or emergency non-armor attacks, the suit would serve adequately, but against Arc-powered opposition, the suit would be woefully outmatched. The suit’s thin connected armor plates would serve to stop most forms of small-arms fire, smaller scale explosives, energy-based attacks, and high temperatures. However, more powerful weapons are shown to have extreme damaging effects against the suit. Ivan Vanko’s energy whips were able to render the armor mostly destroyed in seconds through several hits. Though it is obsolete compared to the other Iron Man platforms, the suit shines in portability and its ability to be quickly deployed in any location from a small brief-case into a full suit of armor with 100% body coverage, offensive capabilities, and limited flight.

Despite the downsides, it was shown that it could still have impressive strength with large-scale damage, suggesting a high reliability. It is not shown if the flaps of the other Iron Man platforms are present on the Mark V, though it is unlikely from the looks of the back plates. This means that Tony cannot exceed certain speeds during flight for the chance of tumbling out of control or not being able to maneuver adequately.

Deployment

The suitcase is armed by means of a key attached to a chain on the case’s handle. Once armed, the bottom of the case is stepped on while on the ground, causing the case to spring open, flip up, and slide into several sections. The armored gauntlets with handles rotate into place for Tony to grab while stepping into the open armored boots. The handles protruding are grabbed and pushed into the gauntlets which wrap around his wrists.

The main section of the suit is lifted onto his chest where the ARC Reactor cover is attached to his chest and initializes the main deployment. The underlying leg mechanics and motors wrap around his legs while the plates covering his back go over his shoulders. The next stage of deployment is initiated when Tony pulls the gauntlets off of the main assembly and away from his body, extending fully out.

The underlying arm mechanics and motors are extended with it and wrap around his arms while the armor plates slide into place to be deployed. The leg and waist armor plates slide down and begins wrapping around the underneath assembly. The armor plates slide down the assembly and into place before rotating flat to cover the different sections of his body such as his legs and arms. As the arm plates flatten, the gauntlets fit into place and the repulsors begin receiving power from the ARC Reactor.

Chest plates slide across and flatten to provide torso, waist, and back protection while the ARC Reactor lights up to begin feeding full power to the suit. The shoulders and neck plates slide and lock into place as the helmet pieces are brought up from the back and fit around Tony’s head.

The deployment is complete when the faceplate slides closed and seals, as the helmet and HUD receive power and finish initializing. The entire process is shown to have been completed in roughly 18-20 seconds, which while being incredibly quick, Tony is immobile and vulnerable during that time, and thus the suit can only be deployed when a safe moment is found and utilized.

Trivia

  • The Mark XXXVIII was one of the six unlockable armors available, as part of the «Iron Man 3 Unlock The Armors» promotional event for the film. It was released together with the Mark XVII, Mark XXXIII, Mark XXXV, Mark XXXIX and Mark XL.
  • The Mark XXXVIII bears an uncanny resemblance to a suit of Terminator Armour from the Warhammer 40,000 Franchise.
  • Currently, the Mark XXXVIII’s status is unclear.
    • If the Mark XXXVIII blew up as part of the Clean Slate Protocol, the oil rig would have collapsed as it held it up for the entirety of the battle. But the rig did not collapse at all in the movie.
    • The Mark XXXVIII is available as part of the «Iron Man Hall of Armor» LEGO set. Whether this means that the suit survived, or it’s a rebuilt version is currently unclear.

Armor Features

Armor Add-Ons

The Mark XLI’s armor piece interlocking ability.

Built as an exoskeleton suit of an Iron Man Armor, the Mark XLI has little plating covering it’s entire structure, which makes it’s defense level weak and vulnerable to powerful attacks. Although plateless, the Mark XLI has a special mechanism that allows other armor parts to attach to the uncovered areas of the armor.

The suit allows any usable Iron Man armor plates to be able to attach to the armor and interlock with the suit, which makes it possible to have armor to cover its internal systems.

Donning System

The Mark XLI, along with all the other newly built Mark suits, uses a more advanced technology that was based off on the Mark VII’s technology, which is able to wrap itself around Tony’s body, without the aid of robotic arms or any external mechanicals.

It can flexibly open itself to allow Tony to enter into the suit and automatically wrap itself around him, anywhere at anytime, much like the Mark XLII’s technology and the other newly built Mark suits’.

History

Before Iron Man 3

The Iron Legion and Creation

Sometime after the Battle of New York, Tony Stark, who was haunted by his near death experience from the event, suffered from post traumatic stress disorder, became paranoid and obsessed with security.

Because of this, Stark began working on the Iron Legion, and through its development, created several Iron Man Armors, from the Mark VIII to the Mark XL, all featuring various designs and purposes. After the Mark XL / Shotgun’s completion, Stark proceeded to working on his next armor.

Somewhere between November and Christmas 2013, Tony ventured onto creating a new design as well as a new type of technology for the Iron Man Armor. Stark’s work resulted in the birth of the «Prehensile Technology» and the all-new Mark XLI.

The Mark XLI was a completely new armor in design and in capabilities, and would also serve as the prototype base armor for future Iron Man Armors. Stark designed the suit as an external skeleton for the Iron Man Armor which gave the armor a plate-less appearance. All of these features gave room for an increase in speed, maneuverability and flexibility for the user. During the time period Tony spent working on the Mark XLI, he gave it the name «Bones» because of it’s skeletal appearance.

The Mark XLI in the Hall of Armors.

It was presumed that the armor was tested a number of times before it achieved full functionality and was certified combat ready.

Completion and Storage

When the the Mark XLI was completed, Stark stored it in the Hall of Armors Chamber beneath his Malibu House for future use. After Bone’s success, Tony began working on it’s successor. Realizing the capabilities of his new prehensile tech, Stark continued to improve it and combined it into his next armor, resulting into the prototype Mark XLII.

Malibu Raid

When Tony’s Malibu Mansion was raided, and later destroyed, the Mark XLI along with the rest of the Iron Legion were still stored safely within the Hall of Armors Chamber, as it was left undamaged during the attack. The chamber was still intact, completely sealed, and concealed from view.

This was part of Stark’s plan, in which the Iron Legion was to be used later after he uncovered the truth behind the Mandarin and A.I.M.

Iron Man 3

Activation of the «House Party Protocol»

The Mark XLI was activated by J.A.R.V.I.S. along with all the other armors in the Hall of Armors under the «House Party Protocol». It then flew out of the Hall of Armors and went towards the Roxxon Oil Rig, together with the other 35 armors.

When Tony gives J.A.R.V.I.S. the order to «Target all Extremis heat signatures. Disable with extreme prejudice.» J.A.R.V.I.S. replies with «Yes sir!» which echoes throughout all the armors, including the Mark XLI.

The armor then begin targeting and attacking the Extremis Soldiers in the area, fighting them off in the ensuing battle.

The armour is later seen hovering in front of five Extremis soldiers. Jarvis, who was controlling the armour, remarks, «Gentlemen,» as the armour then splits apart. The corresponding pieces fly into the Extremis soldiers and knock them off the platform, presumably killing all five of them. The armour pieces then reassemble.. The suit doesn’t make an on screen appearance for the rest of the movie.

Because the Mark XLI is plateless, not suited for heavy combat, vulnerable to powerful attacks, and has a weak defense level, it was most likely destroyed in battle by the Extremis Soldiers.

History

Before Iron Man 3

The Iron Legion and Creation

Sometime after the Battle of New York, Tony Stark, who was haunted by his near death experience from the event, suffered from post traumatic stress disorder, became paranoid and obsessed with security.

Because of this, Stark began working on the Iron Legion, and through its development, created several Iron Man Armors, from the Mark VIII to the Mark XXII, all built with various designs and purposes. After the Mark XXI’s completion, Stark wanted to create a new armor for his best friend James Rhodes, and began working on the prototype, the Mark XXII.

It was presumed that the armor was tested a number of times before it was fully functional and ready for combat.

Completion and Storage

After completing the armor, Stark stored it in the Hall of Armors Extension beneath his Malibu House, where all the other previous Iron Man Armors he completed were stored in as well.

With Sneaky’s completion, Stark proceeded to create a new type of suit with special anti-heat features, the Mark XXIII, also known as «Shades».

Iron Man 3

Malibu Raid

When Tony’s Malibu Mansion was raided, and later destroyed, the Mark XXII along with the rest of the Iron Legion were still stored safely within the Hall of Armors Chamber, as it was left undamaged during the attack. The chamber was still intact, completely sealed, and concealed from view.

This was part of Stark’s plan, in which the Iron Legion was to be used later after he uncovered the truth behind the Mandarin and A.I.M.

Activation of the «House Party Protocol»

The Mark XXII was activated by J.A.R.V.I.S. in the basement of Tony’s Malibu Mansion, under the order of the House Party Protocol issued by Tony. It then flew out of the Hall of Armors and went towards the Roxxon Oil Rig, together with the other 35 armors.

When the Iron Legion arrived, the Mark XXII followed flew beside the other armors as they slowly surrounded the area. While waiting for Tony’s orders, the Mark XXII can be seen hovering in the background with the other armors, as the Extremis Soldiers stand surprised with the arrival of Iron Legion.

After, Tony orders JARVIS to «Target all Extremis heat signatures. Disable with extreme prejudice.», which JARVIS replies to with «Yes sir!», which echoes out through all of the suits, including the Mark XXII.

The Mark XXII destroyed and anchored to a metal pole.

The armor then started targeting and attacking the Extremis Soldiers in the rig, and fights them off with the help of the other armors during the ongoing battle. In the midst of the battle, it can be briefly see blasting and fighting soldiers on the backgroune. The armor is later controlled by JARVIS to aid Tony in his rescue for Pepper.

Failed Attempt and Destruction

The suit flew up to the platform of Tony’s location, and just as Tony was about to jump into the suit, an Extremis Soldier vaulted a yellow metal pole from one of the oil rig’s rails, straight through it. Thus destroying it as it was nailed on one of the base stands of the oil rig, while many parts of the suit broke off.

Armor Design

The Mark XV’s most notable features are its slim and smooth body armor. It has a chrome colored plating, which allows it to turn lighter or darker to suit its environment. The suit also features a different design for both gauntlets. The left gauntlet has blue lights & a skeletal appearance, while the right gauntlet has a more basic design. This is because the armor’s left gauntlet could be equipped with an electric field, (like to the Mark XXXVII), an EMP, or a sonic pulse (like the Mark XLII). The suit’s right gauntlet could be equipped with rockets, unlimited lasers, a battle blade, a grappling hook, a grenade, a cryo blaster, a tranquilizer gun, or a mini gun.

The suit is lighter than the usual Iron Man suit, to enhance its speed, agility, and to allow its stealth system to take effect and to easily cope with stealth missions. The suit retains its signature Repulsors, as well as its Chest Repulsor and its Vibranium Powered Arc Reactor, like its previous Mark suits.

History

Iron Man

The Mark II armor was first constructed by Tony Stark after escaping the Ten Rings. This iteration of the suit was much more streamlined than the Mark I with more focus on flight. The suit was taken on its first flight, where it was discovered it had a problem with freezing at high altitudes. This issue was solved with a refined titanium-gold alloy used in the Mark IIIarmor and above.

Iron Man 2

After the altercation at Stark Industries, Tony stored the Mark II armor in his private workshop, and fitted it with its own Arc Reactor so as not to drain power from his personal reactor.

Tony becomes drunk at what he believes to be his last ever birthday party while in the Iron Man Mark IV armor. Tired with Stark’s child-like behavior, James Rhodes steals the Mark II and battles Tony, demolishing several rooms in his house. Rhodes then delivers it to the US Air Force, who with the help of Justin Hammer customizes and weaponizes it, transforming it into the War Machine Armor.

Iron Man 3

After recovering the Mark II armor and stripping it of all Hammer tech and weaponry, the armor can be seen in its original form in the original Hall of Armors in Tony’s garage, along with Marks I, III, IV, V, VI, and VII. It is later destroyed after the Mandarin’s forces destroy Tony’s Malibu house by demolishing it with missiles.
